Dysmenorrhoea

Dysmenorrhoea refers to painful menstruation, typically involving cramps in the abdomen. It usually begins around the time when menstruation begins. The symptoms typically last even lesser than three days. The pain occurs in the pelvis or lower abdomen. Other symptoms may include back pain, diarrhoea or nausea.

Cause

Dysmenorrhea has two classifications, namely primary and secondary on the basis of the absence or presence of an underlying cause. Secondary Dysmenorrhea is the Dysmenorrhea which is associated with an existing condition.

The most common cause of secondary Dysmenorrhea-

  • Endometriosis (where cells that normally line your uterus grow outside it in other parts of your body but go through the same monthly changes)
  • Fibroids or endometrial polyps (non-cancerous growths of your womb)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (an infection in your reproductive organs)
  • Adenomyosis (thickening of the walls of your uterus)

Treatment

Very heavy periods at menarche and menopause might spontaneously settle. When the degree of bleeding is mild, a woman can be assured of not having any abnormal cause. In case of anaemia being caused during bleeding, iron tablets can be administered for restoring the normal level of haemoglobin.

However, for availing the best results, it is essential to consult a doctor.
